OUR PHILOSOPHY FOR TROPHY DEER

It takes genetics, good nutrition and age to produce quality whitetails.  We know that without genetics all the nutrition and age still won't get you much.  Dr. Kroll says that in the wild only 1 buck in 1,500 becomes a 170 class deer.  What are the odds of having one on the ranch if you don't help mother nature.
The belief is that a trophy buck in the wild will only breed up to 5 does.  If you take into effect normal mortality of 50% only 5 fawns will survive in which left are bucks.  To put it simply your trophy buck only produced 2 buck fawns for that breeding season.

If we were to take that buck and put him in a controlled pen with 20 good does under DMP permit.  We could produce 30 to 40 fawns with an excellent survival rate.  This would net you a 100% plus better return for your management program.

How about a simple solution for complex management problem of growing trophy deer.

1. You must have good genetics or all the food plots and supplemental feeding are just not going to produce trophy animals.
2. It is a fact that 50% of a trophy buck is due to the does genetics.  In controlled pens we know that it takes a good doe to produce a trophy buck.  To produce a quality trophy buck herd you must have good genetic does to breed too.
3. You must have patience to let the bucks mature.

HOW TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM
In a perfect world we would shoot all the inferior bucks and does and start over with quality bred does and a couple of breeder bucks.  This would assure you that you have good genetic animals that are not mixing with inferior bloodlines.

Introducing quality bred does into the pasture will no doubt help as long as they are tagged but they will still breed with inferior genetics.
Releasing quality breeder bucks will also help but you still have the problem of your good bucks breeding with inferior does.
The BEST scenario would be putting 10 to 20 high genetic does in a pen with a top breeder buck and releasing the tagged offspring each year.  In this case you can assure yourself that a trophy buck breeds all the top quality does, and your fawn survival rate will be a lot higher.  After a few years of shooting the older untagged native deer you could replace all does with top quality genetics.
